Groupon Cancun Offering Great Local Deals

Groupon Groupon Cancun Offering Great Local Deals

Groupon, the “deal of the day” website that features discount coupons for local and national products and services, has come to Cancun. Launched in the US in  2008, Groupon has grown to include major US, Canadian, and other international markets.

The premise is simple:  Complete your free registration with the market of your choice, then receive daily emails announcing the “deal of the day,” which you can then choose to purchase or ignore.  The deals feature hefty discounts at area businesses, but you have to act right away to take advantage of the savings–the sale is one day only, though the coupons themselves can be used for three or four months (the time limits and restrictions are listed on the sale page).

Groupon Cancun’s market includes Playa del Carmen and other spots along the Riviera Maya. Whether you live in Playa del Carmen or are just planning to visit soon, Groupon Cancun can expose you to great services you might not otherwise have heard of or have been able to afford.  Recent deals have included spa treatments, restaurants, and activities.  The site is entirely in Spanish, but those who don’t speak Spanish can use Google Translate to help them with their registration process.

Whale Shark Season now Open for 2011

The waters around the island of Holbox are one of the few areas on our planet, where whale sharks are frequent visitors. Every year, although usually solitary, whale sharks congregate here between June and September, when the ocean becomes especially plankton rich.  As predictable whale shark aggregations are very rare, they are extremely valuable for researchers to study the world’s largest fish and for the local community of Holbox eco tourism.

holbox island Whale Shark Season now Open for 2011

The whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea, it is thought to have evolved around 200 million years ago.

The whale shark reaches 20 mt, although the most accurate measurement made is 14/15 meters. Whale sharks feed on a variety of tiny animals including zooplankton, thimble jellyfish, baitfish and squid. The whale shark is ovoviviparous, where the young develop in eggcases in the uterus and are then born live. Although sharks in general produce very few young compared to bony fish, whale sharks have been known to produce an estimated 300 live young in one litter. Although no one knows how long they live or where they reproduce, they are thought to reach sexual maturity at about 30 years of age, or when they reach close to 30 ft/9-10m in length, and may live beyond 100 years old. World population estimates are unknown but they are thought by shark scientists to be very low.

Mexico Launches Mayan Tourism Campaign Through 2012

Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced the launch of “Mundo Maya 2012″ (Mayan World 2012), a program to increase tourism and promote the Mayan Culture Legacy in Mexico through 2012.

chichen itza Mexico Launches Mayan Tourism Campaign Through 2012

“Today we are the 10th power for tourism in the world, and we are working hard to be in the top five,” Calderon said at the announcement of the campaign. “We want the world to know the splendors of the Mayan civilization, with the end goal of positioning Mexico as a privileged and unique touristic destination.”

Between now and Dec. 21, 2012, when the Mayan calendar officially ends, the Mexican government will promote a variety of events in southeastern Mexico’s “Mayan World,” made up of the states Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Quintana Roo andYucatan. This region is home to six of Mexico’s 27 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most found in any one country.

“This effort looks to give an unprecedented boost to touristic activity in the country’s southeastern states, where this incredible civilization was established,” said Calderon. “We want tourists from Mexico and the world to know Mexico. We want them to explore the unrivaled riches that this magical region has to offer.”

An aggressive infrastructure investment in roads and facilities will improve access to the various archeological sites withinMexico’s Mayan World, as well as develop projects to better showcase the Mayan Culture Legacy. Among the many enhancement projects being developed throughout the country as part of this campaign, Mexico is building “Palace of Maya Civilization” and Museo del Mundo Maya. It is expected that “Palace of Maya Civilization” will capture 20 percent of the 4,000 tourists who visit the site of Chichen Itza daily, while the museum of Mundo Maya is expected to receive 300,000 visitors per year, according to projections of Cultur (Board Of Units Of Cultural And Tourist Services Of The State Of Yucatan). Similar infrastructure projects are expected to be developed in Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo.

“The celebration of the end of the Mayan calendar’s cycle is an extraordinary opportunity to promote the great cultural, historical and human heritage that we posses,” said Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara Manzo. “We are so excited to share the unique Mayan culture with the world.”

Through hosting international expositions, conferences, and meetings with leading researchers and specialists, the government hopes to increase tourism to the region, which currently receives an average of 250,000 visitors a month. To improve the region’s cultural offerings, they will restore old archeological sites and open new ones, as well as promote dance festivals, concerts, theatrical performances and the region’s traditional gastronomy. The hope is that the increased tourism will create jobs and stimulate the region both economically and socially.

This focused campaign supports Mexico’s ambitious goal of becoming one of the top-five most visited countries in the world. It is estimated that 52 million tourists will visit southeastern Mexico through 2012, spending approximately $23 million.

Travel Safety in Perspective: USA vs. Mexico

 By Tim Liffel    http://travel.booklocker.com/

zacatecas jesuit 500 Travel Safety in Perspective: USA vs. Mexico
Zacatecas – older than Boston, and safer.  There’s been a lot of news coverage about violence in Mexico, very little of it bothering to note that Mexico is a huge country with thirty-some states and that a) almost all of that violence is narco-related and b) you can count the number of tourists affected on one hand.  Meanwhile, according to the FBI, “An estimated 15,241 persons were murdered nationwide in 2009″ in the United States of America.

Officially, 111 U.S. citizens were killed in Mexico last year, a third in just two cities. Almost all of them were involved in illicit vocations, usually the trafficking of guns, drugs, or people across the border. This is 111 out of close to 8 million visitors, with nearly 1 million of those being part- or full-time residents choosing Mexico over the U.S. or Canada.

You know who else had 111 murders in one year recently? Boston. And Las Vegas. And Orlando. Are any tourists scared of going to those places?

Meanwhile, almost 1,000 U.S. citizens died in Puerto Rico. Nobody running the news desks cares about Puerto Rico or has an incentive to make people scared of Puerto Ricans (by nature, they can’t be “illegal immigrants”), so this isn’t widely reported.

Then there’s the U.S. proper, which can’t get a State Department travel alert because it’s, well, not a foreign country. How’s your city doing in comparison to Mexico when it comes to the annual numbers?

Atlanta  - city, 80 murders. Atlanta MSA (metropolitan statistical area), 325 murders
Baltimore – 238 city, 298 MSA
Boston – 50 city, 111 MSA
Dallas/Ft. Worth – 210 city, 310 MSA
Detroit – 365 city, 447 MSA
Houston – 287 city, 462 MSA
Indianapolis – 100 city, 111 MSA
Jacksonville, FL – 99 city, 120 MSA
Kansas City – 100 city, 163 MSA
Las Vegas – 111 city, 133 MSA
Los Angeles – 312 city, 768 MSA
Miami  - 59 city, 377 Miami to Boca Raton corridor
New Orleans – 174 city, 252 MSA
New York City – 471 city, 778 MSA
Orlando – 28 city, 111 MSA
Philadelphia – 302 city, 436 MSA
Phoenix – 122 city, 302 MSA
San Francisco – 45 city, 292 MSA
St. Louis – 143 city, 210 MSA
Washington, DC – 143 city, 325 MSA

To put things in perspective, the murder rate in the Yucatan state of Mexico is 2 per 100,000. That’s about the same as Fond du Lac, Wisconsin or Evansville, Indiana. Mexico City’s is 8 per 100,000. Despite being one of the most populated cities on the planet, that’s on par with Albuquerque, NM. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never felt scared in Albuquerque…

Xel-Ha!

If you are a water baby or just a lover of all things marine, then a trip to Xel-Ha is a must!

In the Mayan language, Xel means ‘spring’ and Ha means ‘water’. Situated south of Playa del Carmen, Xel Ha is the largest natural open sea aquarium in the world, offering a myriad of land and water activities, ecological attractions, world-class restaurants, and a wealth of amazing experiences.

At Xel-Ha, you can snorkel, swim with dolphins or walk along the bottom of the sea through stingrays and other marine creatures.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can tackle the  ‘Floating Bridge’, ‘Trepachanga’ (cross the river using two parallel ropes) or jump into the sparkling turquoise sea from the ‘Cliffs of Courage’.

If you are less daring, perhaps a bicycle ride through the jungle, a walk down ‘The Path of Consciousness’ or a relaxing float down the river in an inner tube would be more your ‘thing’. For the ultimate in relaxation, enjoy a delicious cool cocktail on Hammock Island.

Check out the El Dorado Cavern with its walls studded with fossils of ancient mollusks and other prehistoric specimens, or the Mayan Cave’s play of light and sound, providing a magical refuge for the mind and soul. The Plant Nursery, an open-air botanical garden with an enormous variety of exotic and indigenous vegetation is well worth visiting too.

The simply huge variety of easily available, fun, adventurous, historical and relaxing activities combined with the breathtaking beauty of its white sand beaches and turquoise sea and delightful Avenida Quinta are what makes Playa del Carmen one of the premier vacation destinations in the world.

Combine all this with a stay in one of Royal Palms luxury condos and you will know you have truly landed in paradise!
